Director of Health Services
JOB SUMMARY
Guided by a philosophy of holistic wellness, Counseling & Health Services (C&HS) is an integrated medical and mental health clinic that provides services to Hamline's undergraduate and graduate students. The practice focuses on primary care for illness and injury, well visits, reproductive/sexual health, and mental health concerns. Services are funded by student fees with minimal 3rd-party billing. The Director of Health Services position includes a variety of responsibilities including: direct clinical service, wellness promotion, administrative oversight, supervision, collaboration with a multidisciplinary team, and engagement with the university community through committees and outreach programs.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Oversee the daily operations of the campus health center
- Provide high-quality direct patient care
- Exercise independent judgement, including occasional assessment of urgent medical needs
- Assess and prescribe medications for common mental health concerns (e.g. depression, anxiety)
- Display a high level of multicultural competence in service delivery
- Follow current best practices in medicine and oversee consistent implementation
- Provide leadership for the Health Services staff
- Hire, train, and promote the ongoing professional development of the Health Services staff
- Develop and implement protocols for clinic flow and optimal patient care
- Ensure compliance with applicable laws and regulations (e.g., HIPAA, FERPA, CLIA)
- Articulate a model of holistic wellbeing and engage campus stakeholders in this enterprise
- Demonstrate strong public speaking and presentation skills for health promotion
- Implement, update, and evaluate the effectiveness of intervention programs
- Manage a budget and maximize cost effectiveness of services
- Maintain confidentiality of all protected student health information
- Additional duties as needed
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
- This is a full-time exempt position (0.92 FTE) from August 1 through May 31, and part-time during the months of June and July
- Occasional evening and weekend work may be required

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND KEY COMPETENCIES
- Understanding the developmental needs of college students and the role of a campus health center
- Proven skill in working with late adolescent/young adult patients
- Experience and sensitivity in working with students from diverse backgrounds
- Skill in working effectively with patients experiencing emotional crisis or significant medical distress
- Ability and willingness to draw blood, run basic lab tests, and give injections
- Adherence to best practices and standards of care in medicine
- Knowledge of current medical technology and electronic medical records
- Outstanding ability to multi-task and adapt to changing priorities and tasks
- Excellent communication skills (written, verbal, and group presentation)
- Ability to speak clearly and concisely and convey complex information such that others understand
- Problem-solving skills to analyze situations, draw relevant conclusions, and devise a course of action
- Outstanding organization and planning skills
- Skill in managing and providing constructive feedback to other employees
- Demonstrated knowledge and interest in student wellness and health promotion
- Understanding of current best practices in public health, including pandemic response
- Knowledge of policies and regulations applicable to college health and higher education
- Ability to effectively manage a departmental budget
- Strong collaboration skills
MINIMUM EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- Clinical credentials as a Nurse Practitioner (NP) or Physician Assistant (PA)
- Candidates must possess a master's degree (or higher) in their field from an accredited university
- A minimum of three (3) years of full-time post-degree professional experience is required
PREFERRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- Work in a leadership or supervisory role (strongly preferred)
- Experience/credentials in Public Health or related fields (strongly preferred)
- Prior college health clinic experience (strongly preferred)
REQUIRED LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION
- NP candidates must possess Family/ Adult certification through ANCC or equivalent certifying body
- PA candidates must possess NCCPA certification & license with the MN Board of Medical Practice
- Current DEA license (including schedule II-V controlled substances)
- BLS certification
